3D printing in PLA

PLA is the cheapest and crispest material: right for a prototype, a model or an indoor object, wrong in the sun and the heat. Price per gram and an example priced by our quote engine.

PLA is 3D printing's default material: the cheapest per gram, the most precise, available in the most colours. It suits anything that stays indoors and cool: a form prototype, a model, a desk enclosure, a decorative object. It deforms from about sixty degrees and ages in the sun; for a car or outdoor part, see PETG or ASA.

The prices, colours and ratings quoted on this page are read from our catalog and quote engine when the page loads: they are what an order pays today.

What gets printed in PLA

  • Form and fit prototypes: the part comes out crisp, to size, and costs the least.
  • Architecture, product and mechanism models, exhibition parts.
  • Enclosures for electronics that do not get warm, on a desk or in a room.
  • Everyday objects: brackets, organisers, game pieces, business cards in relief.
  • Teaching parts and student projects, where the price per part matters.

Its properties

Rigid and fairly strong in compression, PLA snaps rather than bends under impact. It sands and paints well, and holds small details better than the other polymers.

The catalog's ratings, out of 10
PropertyRating
Mechanical strength6/10
Flexibility3/10
Heat resistance3/10
  • Heat: softens around 55 to 60 °C. A part left in a car in the sun or near an engine deforms.
  • UV and outdoors: yellows and turns brittle within months outside. Indoors only.
  • Water: absorbs almost nothing when cold; prolonged contact with hot water softens it.
  • Automotive: no, except a jig or a cabin part never exposed.

What a PLA part costs

  • 0.20 MAD per gram deposited, density 1.24 g/cm³: at equal volume, it is the weight that changes from one material to the next.
  • In stock today: PLA Premium – Black, PLA Premium – Light Blue, PLA Premium – Orange, PLA – Camel, PLA – Charcoal Grey, PLA – Chocolate, PLA – Dark Blue, PLA – Gold, PLA – Light Blue, PLA – Natural, PLA – Orange, PLA – Pink, PLA – Red, PLA – White, PLA – Yellow.
  • An electronics case of 55 g, 1 h 48 of printing, costs 178.42 MAD delivered in PLA, against 178.42 MAD in PLA (+0%).

These figures are read from the catalog and computed by our quote engine when this page loads; every order costs at least 105.00 MAD delivered. The exact price of your part shows on the online quote, and the guide How much does 3D printing cost in Morocco explains where the price comes from.

Designing for PLA

  • Walls of at least 0.8 mm; PLA tolerates thin walls better than other materials, but they stay brittle.
  • Avoid clips and living hinges that flex often: PLA fatigues quickly. For those, PETG or TPU.
  • For a very crisp result, standard finish; for a presentation part, sanding and paint take well.

The catalog's multi-colour PLA prints one part in several colours of the same polymer, from one file per colour or from the card generator.

Help

Questions on this material

Is PLA strong enough for a functional part?
For a part that does not get warm and takes no repeated impacts, yes: brackets, enclosures, low-load mechanism parts. For a clip, a car part or an outdoor part, take PETG or ASA.
Does PLA resist heat?
No: it softens around 55 to 60 °C. That is the temperature of a dashboard in the sun, a power-supply enclosure or a dishwasher.
Can a PLA part be left outdoors?
A few weeks, no more: the sun yellows it and makes it brittle. For outdoors, ASA keeps its colour and shape.
Is PLA biodegradable?
It is made from plant starch and composts in an industrial facility, at 60 °C with controlled humidity; it does not break down in a garden or in nature.
