What gets printed in ASA
- Exposed car covers, trim and brackets: mirror, grille, strips, dashboard parts.
- Garden, terrace and roof parts: brackets, caps, irrigation parts, panel fixings.
- Enclosures for sensors and antennas installed outside or in a greenhouse.
- Signage and sign parts, house numbers.
- Spare parts for outdoor equipment: trolleys, furniture, blinds, boats.
Its properties
ASA behaves like ABS: rigid, tough, matte, and it keeps its shape when hot. What it adds is UV resistance: colour and strength do not move after years outside.
- Heat: keeps its shape up to about 95 °C; a dashboard or a bonnet in the sun stay below that.
- UV and outdoors: its reason to exist. No measurable yellowing or embrittlement after years.
- Water and weather: unaffected by rain, sea salt and temperature swings.
- Automotive: the best material in the catalog for any exterior or exposed part, away from the engine.
What an ASA part costs
No colour of ASA is in stock at the moment: the Materials page shows what is, and the online quote prices your part in every material available.
Designing for ASA
- Walls of at least 0.8 mm; 2 mm for a body part that clips on.
- Like ABS, allow a tenth of a millimetre more clearance than in PLA: the part shrinks a little as it cools.
- A car part is drawn from the original, even broken: its clips and seats give the dimensions that matter.
